The Royal Yacht Britannia is now a 5 star visitor attraction and is one of the world's most famous ships. It was launched in 1953 at John brown's shipyard in Clydebank . It has served the |Royal family for 44 years and carried the Queen and various members of the Royal family on 968 official voyages.

In June 1994 the government announce that it would be taken out of service after having travelled 1,087,623 nautical miles calling at over 600 ports in 135 countries.

At the beginning of January 1997 Britannia set sail from Portsmouth to Hong Kong on her last and longest voyage, she was then decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval base in the presence of the Queen. After intense competition from cities around the UK , Edinburgh became successful in her bid to become the new home of the Royal Yacht.

Britannia is now permanently moored in Edinburgh 's historic Port of Leith and visitors can find out what life was like on board ship.

The Britannia sits alongside Ocean Terminal a modern Shopping Complex with free parking, a cinema and a variety of fine shops and restaurants. It is a wonderful day out. 196 words.
